Peter J. Kower, Ph.D. is a Professor of Economics at ºÚÁϳԹÏ꿉۪s Hammack School of Business in Atlanta, Georgia, where he teaches courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics and related fields within the undergraduate curriculum.

Dr. Kower brings extensive academic training to his role, holding a Bachelor’s degree from Arizona State University, a Master in International Management from the American Graduate School of International Management, a Master’s degree from the University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. in economics from The Ohio State University. His scholarly work has contributed to the field of economic history, including peer‑reviewed research on topics such as Civil War–era blockade running and trade dynamics. 

At ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, Dr. Kower is recognized for his commitment to teaching excellence and student engagement. He received the prestigious Lu Thomasson Garrett ’52 Award for Meritorious Teaching in 2017, an honor bestowed by faculty peers for outstanding classroom instruction and dedication to student learning. He was also named a recipient of the Omicron Delta Kappa Outstanding Faculty Award in 2024, further underscoring his impact on the academic community.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Kower actively supports student success and academic programming, collaborating across departments and mentoring students pursuing careers and advanced study in economics and business. His teaching and advising emphasize applied economic analysis, critical thinking and preparation for real‑world decision‑making.

Through his combination of scholarly research and award‑winning teaching, Dr. Kower contributes to ºÚÁϳԹÏ꿉۪s mission of delivering a rigorous, student-centered liberal arts and business education in Atlanta.

    • He was recognized at ºÚÁϳԹÏ꿉۪s commencement ceremony on May 13 by the previous recipient, Dr. Robert Hornback. This award was established in 1994 through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. David (Lu Thomasson) Garrett. The late Mrs. Garrett was a 1952 ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø graduate, an honorary degree recipient, and member emerita of the Board of Trustees. The prize is awarded annually to an outstanding faculty member selected by a committee of his or her peers.
