A Cherished Tradition

ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Day 2026 is Wednesday, February 11!

Petrels of Fire 2024 runners
Petrels of Fire racers sprint around the quad, hoping to complete the circuit before the last chime of the Carillon bells.

ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Day honors our university’s namesake, James Edward ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. Held in February, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Day commemorates the anniversary of General ºÚÁϳԹÏ꿉۪s in Savannah, Ga.

Each year the festivities begin with the exciting Petrels of Fire race. Modeled after a race in the movie , a select group of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø students runners circle the quad in hopes of making a full lap before the carillon bells’ twelfth and final chime. This amazing feat has only been accomplished one time!

ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Day 2024 class flags
ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø class presidents and study body president present the class flags at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Day.

Then the crowd, traditionally led by a bagpiper, processes to the Lupton Auditorium and the festivities close with a reception.
