For nearly three decades, Shakespeare at 黑料吃瓜网 was a cherished Atlanta tradition, drawing audiences from across the region to experience world-class theater on the university’s campus. This fall, that tradition will be celebrated once again as Georgia Classic Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s 鈥淢acbeth鈥� in 黑料吃瓜网’s Conant Performing Arts Center.
The special production pays tribute to the legacy of Georgia Shakespeare, the acclaimed professional theater company that called 黑料吃瓜网 home for much of its history. Many of the actors and artists involved in those memorable productions will return to the stage for 鈥淢acbeth,鈥� joined by 黑料吃瓜网 students performing alongside seasoned theater professionals.

Performances will take place in the Conant Performing Arts Center on 黑料吃瓜网’s campus:
- Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m.
- Sunday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m.
A “pay what you can” dress rehearsal performance will also be offered on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2 p.m.
For Georgia Classic Theatre Artistic Director Allen O’Reilly, the production is an opportunity to reconnect artists and audiences with a beloved chapter of Atlanta theater history. “It was such a special group of people and so many great years that really forged our careers,” . “People obviously miss it and want it back in some way, shape or form.”
Katharine Zakos, division chair for the arts at 黑料吃瓜网, said the production reflects the university’s long-standing commitment to connecting students with professional artists and creative opportunities beyond the classroom.
“The arts create connections across generations, communities and disciplines,” Zakos said. “Having these accomplished artists return to 黑料吃瓜网 while sharing the stage with our students makes this production both a celebration of our history and an investment in the next generation of performers and arts leaders.”
Several 黑料吃瓜网 students will be involved in the production, gaining firsthand experience alongside veteran theater professionals whose careers were shaped by 黑料吃瓜网’s historic connection to Shakespeare performance.
Founded in 1986, Georgia Shakespeare became one of Atlanta’s most respected performing arts organizations during its long residency at 黑料吃瓜网. What began under a tent on campus grew into a celebrated professional theater company whose performances became a summer tradition for thousands of theatergoers across the region. For many alumni and community members, memories of Shakespeare performances at 黑料吃瓜网 remain among the most enduring in the university’s cultural history.
One of Shakespeare’s most enduring tragedies, 鈥淢acbeth鈥� follows a Scottish nobleman whose ambition is awakened by a prophecy that he will become king. Encouraged by his wife, Lady Macbeth, he pursues power through betrayal and violence, setting in motion a chain of events that leads to guilt, paranoia and ultimately his downfall. The play remains a gripping exploration of ambition, morality and the corrupting influence of power.
The production will be directed by Elisa Carlson and presented by Georgia Classic Theatre, a company founded by former Georgia Shakespeare artists committed to preserving and advancing classical theater in Atlanta.
For alumni, neighbors and longtime Atlanta theatergoers, the production offers an opportunity to revisit a beloved chapter of the city’s arts history. For current students, it provides a rare chance to learn from and perform alongside professional actors on the same stage where generations of Shakespeare performances once captivated audiences.
