ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Dr. Leroy Carson shares why strategic planning drives business value

Business owners who spend all their time working in their companies may be limiting their long-term success, according to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Dr. Leroy Carson, who recently shared insights on entrepreneurship, business value and exit planning during an appearance on the national business show “.â€

Carson, assistant professor of business management and director of ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center, joined a panel discussion examining why many small businesses struggle to maximize their value and successfully transition ownership.

THE BIG IDEA

Many entrepreneurs become so focused on daily operations that they fail to think strategically about the future of their businesses.

During the discussion, Carson noted that “most small businesses stay in the tactical ends of the business and they never rise up to the strategic.” Without long-term planning, owners often miss opportunities to build the systems, leadership structures and organizational independence that create lasting value.

The panel identified owner dependency as a common obstacle to growth and succession. Businesses that rely heavily on a founder’s day-to-day involvement can be more difficult to transition and less attractive to potential buyers. Panelists emphasized the importance of financial readiness, succession planning and diversified revenue streams in building sustainable organizations.

FROM THE BOARDROOM TO THE CLASSROOM

Carson’s insights reflect the work he leads in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Hammack School of Business, where he teaches entrepreneurship, innovation and strategic management. Through the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center, he helps students develop the strategic thinking and leadership skills needed to build and grow successful organizations.

For Atlanta’s business community, Carson’s message was clear: sustainable growth requires more than managing today’s priorities. The strongest organizations are built by leaders who intentionally create value for the future.
