Ayah Mateen

ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Student Ambassador

Ayah Mateen, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø student ambassador

Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Major: Communications with a media track, double minoring in Music and Film & Media Studies.

Campus Involvement:
Besides working as a student ambassador, I serve as the president of the Muslim Student Association and as a Sophomore Senator in Student Government.

What do I love about being an ambassador?
I love meeting prospective students and helping them see that college isn’t as intimidating as it might seem.

My favorite off-campus activity:
I love escape rooms, they’re so fun. One time, I did one that had a bookshelf that swung open like in Nancy Drew.

A piece of advice for prospective students:
Wander everywhere. You belong everywhere on this campus, so use your free will and go explore. Visit that half-built stone colosseum in Hermance Stadium. Pop up randomly at the museum with nothing but your half-eaten fries and a smile. Play the old Hearst piano even if you don’t know how. Take a nap in the hammocks or do yoga on the lawn. Climb a tree and blow bubbles in the branches. Almost every door on campus is open to students; if one’s closed, just knock. In high school, you moved where you were told, there were hall passes, bells, and far too many questions. But here, don’t stick to only the buildings where your major takes you. No one asks where you’re going. So just go wherever you want. The campus is yours!

Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana

Major: Physics, Engineering Dual Degree

Involved with: I am the ICC rep of Happy Hearts as well as a SI for chemistry

What I love about being an ambassador: I love that as an ambassador, I get to help people take the next major step in their life. I get to explain why this university is a good choice to take that step with and how we will help them thrive.

Favorite Off-Campus Activity: I love playing video games when not studying

Advice: “My advice to prospective students would be to make sure to focus on your work at some point in time during the week. All fun and no studying leads to your work snowballing and you getting behind (this is general advice for any college).”

Leah Osafo, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø student ambassadorHometown: Columbus, GA

Major: Business Administration

What do you look forward to about being an ambassador?: “I look forward to knowing everyone’s interests and encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone of their major to find other things they enjoy or might be interested in while in college.â€

Campus Involvement:

BCM Community Chair

Favorite Spot on Campus: “The Academic Quad because it’s the best spot to watch clouds, a beautiful Sunrise or Sunset, and a nice place to find your friends before and after class!”

Favorite Off-Campus Spot or Activity: “Atlantic Station is my favorite off-campus spot because there are so many places to shop, and the walk from the MARTA to it is relaxing, pretty, and picture-worthy!â€

What advice do you have for prospective students?:

“Don’t be afraid to step out of the comfort zone of your major. If you have time and space to take a class that doesn’t pertain to your major, I highly suggest it as it expands your interests, and you never know what you’ll learn or what new people you’ll meet outside of your department. As a Business major taking Theater classes on occasion, I love it!”

Fun Fact: “I’m Ghanian-American.”

What do you look forward to about being an ambassador?

I look forward to meeting new people and showing them all the school has to offer. I also love assisting prospective students and their families in the college process because I know personally just how difficult it can be. I’m happy to be there to help others.

Campus involvement:

  • The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS)
  • Student Ambassador

Favorite spot on campus: The Library

Favorite off-campus spot or activity

Walking around Midtown ATL with friends

What advice do you have for prospective students?

When it comes to college planning, get it done sooner rather than later. There are so many things that go into making a college choice and its so much less stressful once things are all confirmed. Also, make sure to keep an open mind before and during your college experience. Your life and wants will change, and its ok to just go with it.

What has been your favorite class so far?

Short Film Production with Professor Burgess

admission ambassador, Emily ChangHometown: Peachtree Corners, GA

Major: Biology

What do you look forward to about being an ambassador?:

“I look forward to meeting prospective students and seeing them see the campus for the first time. It’s always a pleasure to hear what drew people to ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and to see the diverse people that come here.â€

Campus Involvement:

Student Ambassador
Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (STAT)
ASIA
Retract Club

Favorite Spot on Campus:

“I am always in the library or the Cousins Center.â€

Favorite Off-Campus Spot or Activity:

“I don’t have a specific go-to place off campus, but whenever I have free time, I love walking to Town Brookhaven with friends. It’s nice to go to a new location and relax regardless of if we have a place in mind or not. However, I do love going to parks, walking around, feeding the ducks, and having picnics. â€

What advice do you have for prospective students?:

“I think the most important thing to remind yourself of is that it is ok to not have everything together. It is ok to struggle. You are in a new environment, and it’s going to take some time to adapt to the changes. Life is not a straightforward path, so don’t let getting thrown off your ideal path discourage you. Never give up and keep trying; eventually, you’ll find yourself back on track to wherever life is meant to take you.â€
