Letter from the President: Leadership in the Making

One of the most hopeful places on our campus is a room filled with first-year students who are beginning to see themselves as leaders. They are learning how to listen closely, communicate clearly, and step forward with confidence. I see this each time I gather with ϳԹ’s President’s Leadership Fellows, a program that invites a small cohort of new students to intentionally develop their leadership muscle early in their ϳԹ journey.

When I speak with the fellows, I encourage them to think of leadership as something they practice, not something they wait to earn. The skills they are developing include owning a room, communicating with purpose, and building trust. These skills will serve them in their professional, personal, and civic lives. Just as important, I remind them to learn from one another. The relationships they form within this fellowship are as formative as any lesson or speaker.

At a recent gathering, the fellows heard from Lauren Howard ’08, chief revenue officer at Conservice, whose leadership story is rooted in perseverance and perspective. Lauren shared how her grandparents, Cuban immigrants, modeled resilience in the face of adversity. From them, she learned a lasting lesson: while circumstances may change, no one can take away your education or your grit. She spoke candidly with students about the importance of communication and problem solving. She encouraged them to say “yes” to opportunity and take thoughtful risks as they build their careers.

Those conversations come to life on April 14, when the President’s Leadership Fellows will present their capstone projects during a poster session and program completion ceremony. For me, this moment represents something important. It is the first intentional introduction of these students to the wider world of influential alumni, trustees and community leaders. It is a chance to celebrate their growth and affirm that their voices belong in rooms where ideas are shaped and decisions are made.

As we celebrate these students, we are also looking ahead with the launch of our strategic planning process. As we prepare for our bicentennial, this work will focus on four pillars that define the ϳԹ experience: academics; career preparation and readiness; the arts; and athletics. Together, these pillars reflect our commitment to preparing graduates who think critically, communicate effectively, and lead with purpose.

This work is made possible by a community that believes in our students. The success of ϳԹ Giving Day 2026, which surpassed expectations and drew support from alumni across the country, underscored that shared belief. Your generosity creates opportunities that shape lives.

I hope you will also join us for Alumni Weekend, when campus will once again be filled with Petrels reconnecting and celebrating the relationships that define this University. Thank you for the many ways you continue to invest in ϳԹ’s students and its future.

Letter from the President: Powered by Petrels

Each time I walk across campus, I am reminded of the remarkable stories that make ϳԹ such a distinctive place. These stories are captured in this issue of the Carillon. You will read about our newest class of students preparing to shape the future, the transformative experiences of studying abroad, and the traditions that continue to unite generations of Stormy Petrels. As the fall semester got underway, we had several exciting initiatives designed to make a lasting impact on our students:

  • The Writing Center, now in its second year, has celebrated the opening of a new collaborative space. It continues to strengthen students’ writing skills while instilling confidence in their academic voices.
  • This summer’s expanded Bridge Program offered a weeklong pre-orientation experience to help new students transition into college life and take the first steps of their ϳԹ journey.
  • Partnerships across Atlanta, like our collaboration with the Emory School of Nursing Master of Nursing program, are already engaging students and helping to strengthen the region’s nursing workforce.
  • The Career Development team expands their Petrel Career Pathways, introducing students to professional clusters such as health professions, business, communication studies, and pre-law.

We are also proud to share that ϳԹ was recently ranked by Niche as the #1 college location in Georgia. Our home in Atlanta provides students with unmatched opportunities for internships, cultural engagement and career preparation— advantages that extend long after graduation. Alumni often tell me how the city helped shape their lives, and it is gratifying to see this recognition affirm what we’ve always known: Atlanta is an extraordinary place to learn and to launch a future.

In the year ahead, I look forward to meeting even more of you where you are. This fall and spring, I will be traveling to four new cities to connect with alumni and friends. I hope you’ll join us at one of these gatherings to celebrate ϳԹ’s past, present and future together.

Thank you for carrying the ϳԹ spirit into your communities, careers and families, and for contributing to ϳԹ so we can support today’s students. Your support and commitment ensure that today’s students will have the same opportunities to learn, grow and lead. I look forward to all we can accomplish together.

Presidential Update - Spring 2025

Dear ϳԹ Alumni,

It was great to see so many of you at Alumni Weekend this year, and judging by the stories and laughter I heard, it was a good time for all who made the journey back to campus.

It was especially fun for our ’80s graduates as well as the classes of 2015, 2000 and the Golden Petrels of 1975. Our Advancement team led by Vice President Sarah Emerson did an amazing job, and I am grateful to Senior Director of Alumni Engagement and Giving Kathryn Henderson ’17 and her team of Alyssa Merletti ’23, Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement, and Student Assistant Rachel Malone ’27.

As we head into the final weeks of Spring Semester 2025, I want to provide important updates, some of which I was able to share Saturday during the Petrels with the President presentation.

First, I want to encourage you to take advantage of the many opportunities to connect as we sprint toward Commencement on May 3. We have an outstanding lineup of impressive speakers and events coming soon:

  • Support Stormy Petrel Spring sports: baseball, women’s and men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s track and field, women’s and men’s golf, and women’s and men’s tennis teams.
  • Spring 2025 Rikard Lecture: Greg Adams ’79, chair and chief executive officer of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, Cousins Center Atrium, 4 p.m., April 15
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences Symposium (LASS) Lecture:  Hala Moddelmog, CEO of the Woodruff Arts Center, 1 p.m., April 16

We recently welcomed 2012 graduate Aline Mello back as our featured poet at the ϳԹ Out Loud poetry event made by possible by a generous gift from 1988 alumna Professor Leah Hughes. This was the second annual event after last year’s inaugural reading by renown poet Willie Perdomo, and Aline was a delight to the crowd and students alike. You should check out her work and her book, “More Salt Than Diamond,” at .

Next, it’s my pleasure to announce that the Board of Trustees and Faculty Council have approved Carol Tomé, CEO of Atlanta-based United Parcel Service (UPS), to deliver the keynote address and receive an honorary degree at Commencement May 3. Ms. Tomé has a strong commitment to higher education and will offer a memorable and inspiring speech to our graduates.

Finally, I am pleased to inform you that after a national search, Ginger Fay has accepted our offer and will assume the responsibilities of Vice President of Enrollment Management effective June 1, 2025. This is a strategic hire that will capitalize on the momentum built by Interim Vice President Whitney Lewis whose efforts have produced a record number of applications and an increase in deposits year-over-year at this point in the recruitment cycle. I am grateful for Whitney’s expertise and happy to announce that she has agreed to stay on in a contract capacity to assist Ginger with the transition and work on enrollment marketing. With Ginger, I believe we have the leadership to attract and enroll excellent students who will thrive at ϳԹ.

There is much to be done between now and May 3. I’m proud to be working alongside our faculty, staff and you, our supportive alumni, as together we fulfill our mission of teaching excellence, inclusive learning, and preparing students for success as responsible members of a global society.

I look forward to seeing you at an alumni event soon and welcome you back to campus any time. Thank you for all the ways you stay engaged with ϳԹ!

End of semester and holiday message from the President

Dear ϳԹ Community,

As the Fall Semester comes to a close and we turn the page on another calendar year, I want to say thank you for making 2024 an incredible year for your ϳԹ family.

I am grateful for your creativity, diligence, and commitment. Together we achieved the following milestones:

  • We graduated the largest class in ϳԹ history.
  • We awarded more than $27 million in scholarships and other forms of financial aid to deserving students.
  • We achieved an 88% placement rate for new graduates in either grad school or jobs in their field, beating the national average.
  • We welcomed new leaders to campus: Dr. Gabriel Barreneche as our Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and Sarah Emerson as Vice President of Advancement.
  • We cheered on the men’s soccer team to reach the Division III national championship tournament for the second consecutive year.
  • We supported Sanyia Ross and Charity Cloud as they took home the top prize in the university’s first intercollegiate business pitch competition.
  • We rooted for Ashton Deriso and Zachary Benner as they ran in Division III Cross Country National Championship meet.
  • We raised a record $25,000 on GivingTuesday following a record OU Giving Day total of more than $65,000.
  • We invited nationally acclaimed poet Willie Perdomo to campus for the first-ever ϳԹ Out Loud poetry event.
  • We sent students Mackenzie Roberson, Jaely Chavez, and Thalia Boston to Washington, D.C., to present their research to an international audience at the Allied Genetics Conference.
  • We cut the ribbon on a new commuter lounge in the garden level of Hearst Hall.
  • We launched Career Communities for Communications and Healthcare.
  • We energized the community with our first Petey’s Madness pep rally.
  • We introduced a new minor in museum studies.
  • We partnered with Emory University to offer a new pathway to a Master of Nursing degree.

So you see, it was truly a remarkable year. We are well on our way to being known as Atlanta’s premier undergraduate learning experience. Together, we will continue working to make academic excellence accessible to everyone. With your help, we can achieve even bigger and better milestones in 2025.

I sincerely hope you have a wonderful holiday season with family and loved ones. Enjoy your time away.

Sincerely,

Kathryn

Presidential Statements

ϳԹ is an institution of higher education. As expressed in our mission statement, we “are committed to teaching excellence in an inclusive learning environment. We prepare students for success in professional endeavors as responsible and productive contributors to a global society.” Rather than defaulting to issuing presidential statements, our response to issues of the day more often focuses on supporting faculty- and student-driven thoughtful, in-depth, and civil discourse on our campus in which the end goal is to further understanding. This approach not only embodies the spirit of ϳԹ but puts into practice our slogan to “Make a life. Make a living. Make a difference.”

Update from April Board of Trustees Meeting and President’s Town Hall

Dear ϳԹ Community,

The Spring Semester is quickly coming to an end, and you have been busier than ever. In the Town Hall Meeting after our April Board of Trustees meeting, I reflected on how far we have come since this time last year. Thank you to everyone who put forth the extra effort to see us through the season of transition and keep our focus on serving students. It’s because of your efforts and your support that we have fully transitioned into a new and exciting future at ϳԹ, and I’m honored to be a part of it.

The Board meeting arrived at the three-quarter mark in the year, not technically the end, and our financial reporting presented numbers as of the end of March. We still have almost two full months left in our fiscal year, and as you know all too well, there is a heavy lift in student recruitment and Advancement in the last remaining weeks before June 30.

I introduced our new Vice President of Advancement Sarah Emerson to the Board and again at the Town Hall. I happened to run into Georgia State University President Brian Blake at an event after Sarah’s hire had been announced, and he let me know we had recruited away one of their top development officers. She is proving that assessment to be 100% accurate as she hit the ground running upon her arrival April 15.

New Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Gabriel Barreneche, attended the Board dinner on April 18, and he will join us from Berry College on July 1. We look forward to engaging with him at a few intervals between now and then. He brings strengths and experiences that are a perfect fit for ϳԹ, and I know he will make a tremendous impact.

Our financial position remains healthy as we work to be fiscally responsible in our spending. We recently achieved a milestone when the university’s endowment exceeded $50 million for the first time in our history, and we continue to celebrate the reduction in our long-term debt.

The Board, as well as members of our community, have been paying close attention to the national news of colleges forced to close, including most recently Birmingham-Southern College. As we explained to the trustees and again at the Town Hall, we have several distinct advantages over BSC in our fiscal management: revenue is growing, debt is decreasing, the endowment is expanding, and we are drawing less from the endowment each year as we rely on revenue from operations.

I am grateful for the excellent leadership we receive from Pete Stobie and the team in Finance, in collaboration with our Board of Trustees, along with everyone’s careful financial stewardship this year. We will remain vigilant and responsible in our spending. In that spirit, the Board approved a $37.6 million budget that is projected to help us end next fiscal year in the black.

Revenue projections for the next fiscal year, which begins July 1, are dependent on our total enrollment. Our first-year student recruitment continues to be a priority even in the face of ongoing challenges created by the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) update by the Department of Education. We are ahead of last year in every statistical category of recruitment except deposits. We believe this is a direct result of the lag in families filing the FAFSA, and the Office of Enrollment Management is doing everything possible to address the real problems and concerns raised by the FAFSA changes.

To compensate, we shifted our priority deadline from May 1 to May 15, like many universities across the country. We also elected to send multiple financial aid award letters rather than one, so at least families would know what they qualified for in merit aid even if the federal aid amount was not yet available.

Total enrollment is also impacted by retention. Student success is a university priority and an area we’re investing in. Our future is in retention. The formula is simple: the more students we retain and help persist to graduation, the better our students do in launching their careers and the more stable our finances are.

I also briefly mentioned at the Town Hall that the university’s website is undergoing an upgrade. Most of the improvements are technical and on the back end, but you will notice this summer an enhancement to the look and function of the main site while the other domains will be upgraded over time. The entire project should be completed in 18 months.

In conclusion, I hope to see you at many of the events we have scheduled at the end of this semester. Looking ahead to fall, be sure to mark your calendar for the big, university-wide celebration Sept. 19-20 for the Presidential Inauguration. In addition to the investiture ceremony, there will be service projects, special academic events and a post-ceremony meal together.

I hope your summer is restorative and that you can make use of the wellness days the Staff Council proposed and the Senior Administrative Leadership Team approved.

We are making progress on the vision of being known as Atlanta’s premiere undergraduate learning experience. Thank you for all the ways you contribute to making it a reality.

Sincerely,

Kathryn

Dr. Gabriel Barreneche named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear ϳԹ Community,

I am pleased to announce Dr. Gabriel Barreneche will serve as the next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs effective July 1, 2024. Dr. Barreneche currently serves as Dean of the Evans School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and professor of Spanish at Berry College in Rome, Ga. He is the chief academic, administrative, and budgetary officer for the Evans School supervising 69 full-time faculty in nine academic departments and 17 academic majors.

He previously served as Associate Dean for Advising of the College of Liberal Arts at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. He was the academic lead for student success initiatives helping to increase first-year student retention by 4% and second-year student retention by 8% over three years. While at Rollins he also served as Associate Dean of the Faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences, first-year seminar director, director and faculty-in-residence of the living learning communities, and Hispanic studies director. Among his many publications are the co-edited volume “Educational Technology for the Global Village: Worldwide Innovation and Best Practices” and “Reciprocity and Partnership: How Do We Know it Is Working?” which he co-authored in “Reconceptualizing Faculty Development in Service-Learning/Community Engagement.”

A member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, Dr. Barreneche earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Boston College and his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literature from the University of California, Los Angeles.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to Dr. Kendra King Momon for serving so ably as Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs since May of 2023. Her steady leadership and organizational acumen helped the academic enterprise at ϳԹ navigate this season while continuing to serve students and empower their success. She will be indispensable to Dr. Barreneche as he transitions to ϳԹ.
I also want to thank the search committee co-chaired by ϳԹ’s Chief-of-Staff and General Counsel Regina Mincberg and Dr. Brian Patterson, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science. The committee members are Eli Arnold, Dr. Stephen Craft, Dr. Judith Levy, Ed Rosser, Dr. Rhana Gittens Wheeler, and Dr. Amanda Whooley.

I appreciate everyone on campus contributing to the search and helping us focus on our mission. I ask you to welcome Gabriel and show him the same level of support you have given Dr. Momon and me. I believe with Dr. Barreneche’s appointment and with your help, ϳԹ is well-positioned to being recognized as Atlanta’s premier undergraduate learning experience.

Best,

Kathryn
