As graduation approaches, biology major Cameron Eyl ’26 is taking time to reflect on the professor who helped shape his academic journey as a student, scientist and future veterinarian.
In a new video, Eyl reads a letter addressed to Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Lea Alford, thanking her for her mentorship and influence during his time at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø. The letter traces his growth from a student driven by high expectations and self-doubt to one who learned how to manage perfectionism, embrace challenges and see his own potential more clearly.
“You saw I was a student worth investing in long before I realized it myself, and your support helped build the foundation of the newfound confidence I have today,” reflects Eyl in the letter. “Whether it was in microbiology, research in comparative genomics, or the various leadership positions I’ve held, you continuously gave me opportunities and support to step into spaces I once felt grossly under qualified for.”
A biology major deeply involved in undergraduate research and campus leadership, he went on to earn acceptances from several top veterinary programs, including the UC Davis College of Veterinary Medicine, one of the nation’s most highly regarded programs.
“You’ve probably taught me more than you realize,” Dr. Alford responds. “You have grown into such a confident leader—and yet leading with humility is going to be so important for your future career.”
As he graduates this spring, Eyl carries those lessons forward, confident in his preparation and grounded in the relationships that helped him get there.
“Thank you so much for always believing in me,” Eyl concludes. “It truly changed my life.”
